This thesis covers a study on the missiological Significance of Adolf Schlatter’s Theology. Adolf Schlatter was one of the foremost Biblical theologians in the 19th and 20th century in Germany. With his academic excellence and intellectual rigor, he earned the respect of his more liberal peers, even though he contradicted them on almost every point. He was considered as one of the representative of conservative evangelical theologian in Germany. His academic concern and theme were not limited within the systematic and biblical theologies.
The author is interested in the missiological thought and theology of Adolf Schlatter. That is why the author deals the title “A Study on the Missiological Significance of Adolf Schlatter’s Theology”. The purpose of this study is to contribute for the development of the christian mission in today’s plurlalized world through reviewing the old and learning the new. Achieving this purpose is not an easy task, because not only Adolf Schlatter had published massive books and articles, but also he is not a professional missiologist. On that account, the author takes the Werner Neuer’s book Adolf Schlatter: Ein Leben fur Theologie und Kirche as a basic material for this research. This book recounts his childhood, his education at Basel and Tubingen, his ministry, and his teaching career at Bern, Berlin, and finally at Tubingen. Except this biography there is an important book for understanding Adolf Schlatter’s mission, which is Die Theologie der Apostel. It include overall perspective on the early church’s mission. Adolf Schlatter’s enormous works are just recently being translated into English and are increasingly serving as an excellent resource for American evangelical theologians.
This study reveals the five missiological significance of Adolf Schlatter’s works: 1. faith and mission, 2. biblical theology and missiology, 3. service and mission, 4. ecumenism and mission.
The lesson of Adolf Schlatter’s missionary thought will be realized in the following points: make a distinction between faith and doctrine, the classification of the contents and the commitment by faith, criticism of being lack of service and love within the reformation and lutheran orthodoxy and alternative suggestion, ecumenical service of world christianity as a body of Jesus Christ, emphasis on the service of churches as the body of Christ, advocacy of unity/ecumenism parallel with evangelism/church growth, and insights for integration of creation.
