In this paper, we examined how companies can make strategic use of intermediaries to batter meet their technology needs, from the perspectives of resource-based theory and network theory. The results of this study examining the case of Korean IT companies pointed to the particular importance of cooperating with government support organizations and public R&D institutions in building relational assets. Intermediaries of this type played a crucial role in enabling and facilitating joint development projects and promoting technology transfer. Our results support the theory that intermediaries, as they are linked to other organizations and are situated in the midst of the information and resource flows between them, can coordinate and control the exchange of information and resources within a network, and enjoy timely and privileged access to them, and that these abilities give them the means to expand strategic social capitals.
