Since the nineteenth century when Latin American countries began to achieve Independence to the beginning of the twentieth century, many intellectuals have shown the interest in Latin American identity. The main figures in this area were Simon Bolivar, Domingo Faustino Sarminto, Jose Enrique Rodo, Jose Vasconcelos. All of them helped the search for identity and national construction of Latin American countries, imagining a national community to give unity to the fragmented cultures.
Generally ‘Our America’ by Jose Marti, published in 1891, is regarded as a manifesto of the mestizaje. In the twentieth century the expression ‘Our America’ became an effective idelolgeme that was used as an evaluative concept on the construction of racial difference between Latin America and Europe / the United States. But so far there war no detailed study of this article, nor has it been discussed what Marti wanted to express. Marti does not build “Our America” from the hate toward the saxon race. It simply suggests the dynamic nature of all experience that seeks to confront their own preconceptions: a dynamism which in turn relates to the mobility of any appropriation to itself over time. This would explain, for instance, the most diverse ideological appropriations of Marti’s thought in the twentieth century.
