This study investigates the life of Yi Kyugyong- the writer of Oju Yunmun Jangjeon Sango(五洲衍文長箋散稿) and Siga Jeomdeng(詩家 點燈) - in order to fill out gaps in the chronolgical record of him.
Findings and resulsts of the investigation are as follows.
1. Studies so far on Yi Kyugyong -well known under the nom de plume of O Ju - have primarily highlighted influences from the paternal side of his family including Yi Deokmu and Yi Gwanggyu and necessarily failed to notice influences exerted by his mother and the mother’s side of the family. This study explored his life in childhood and found out that his academic career in early stage was heavily informed particularly by his maternal grandfather, Jeong Uidong, and his mother did as well.
2. This study also enabled us to document the entire life course of Yi Kyugyong that has not fully known until now for all the articles relevant to his life and scholarship. He moved out from Seoul and lived in Bongam, Seocheon, with his family from 34 through to 39(1821~1826). And then he came back and had resided in Seoul from 1826 up to 1832. Finally he removed at the age of 45 in 1826 and had lived in Gongju, Chungju or Jecheon.
Such removals includes not only long-distance ones such as from Seoul to Seocheon; Seocheon to Seoul; Seoul to Gongju; Gongju to Chungju; and Chunju to Jeocheon but also several ones around Chungju and Jeocheon.
3. The Baggyudong village of Gongju province where he began to live around 45 was just a tiny residence composed of only 10 houses.
From this fact it can be inferred that he had already started a secluded life. The settlement in the village is a circumstantial evidence that he did not have economic foldhold around the area. It could be assumed that Yugu of Gwangjumok -where his wife was buried- and Docheon of Ryenwonyeok -where his mother was buried- and Ducksanmyen of Jeocheon- where his own tomb was located- were places that was chosen after his family moved in there, not ones that they had long-time connections before their moves-in.
4. The span that Yi Kyugyong had lived in Jeocheon is a important key to tracking his academic life. This is because crucial references for studying his life and academia, such as Oju Yunmun Jangjeon Sango (五洲衍文長箋散稿) and Siga Jeomdeng(詩家點燈), are estimated to have been written when he was living in Jeocheon.
