The scholar of Sung Confucianism at Youngnam, Nammyung Jo-Sik was a master of Confucianists. He was versed in Arithmetic, military camp, and medical science and the record saying he enjoyed reading a hygiene book - " Chamdonggye"[Buddhist book written by Heecheon during the Dynasty of Tang in China] is evidence of looking for his unknown hygiene idea. It's not coincident that a lot of personalities, such as Mangwoodang Kwak, Jae-woo, Hankang Jeong-ku, and Tojeong Lee, Ji-ham, etc. came one after another.
His closest friend and teacher, Deokgye-Oh-Keon ardently followed teacher Nammyung as much as to be called "Ojoyangkun." His academic propensity much resembled Nammyung, and a prose poem 「living water spouting from a valley」, 「There can't exist any things without fidelity」, 「casket firmly bound with metal wire for keeping secret documents」, 「while harvesting a Japanese apricot in a field」 and [a pheasant living at a pond side]' compiled in his first volume of " Deokgye Collection" of his collection of works smack of hygienic atmosphere even from the very title. He made clear his Sung Confucianism-based attainments and hygienic attitudes toward the visible things through his prose poem harmoniously.
Nammyung's granddaughter's husband and at the same time the famous loyal troops commander who defended Uiryeong- Mangwoodang, Kwak, Jaewoo was an authentic hygienic Confucianist who compiled the Confucianism and the posture of life based on hygienic theories in " Yangshimyogyeol ".
Nammyung's receptive attitude never putting limits on Sung Confucianism -based attainments and learning produced a lot of disciples who had vast knowledge of medical science and hygienic idea and paved the way for the hygienic idea of the present Yeongnam district could secure its position by fostering scientific atmosphere which didn't exclude medical science for Confucianists.
