The Yogas?tra instructs that one should choose appropriate methods for spiritual practice that are suitable to himself in order to attain samprajn?tasam?dhi and asamprajn?tasam?dhi. In addition to this, the Yogas?tra admits the soteriological significance of ??vara. The commentators of the Yogas?tra, Vy?sa, V?caspatimi?ra, Vijn?nabhik?u conceive ??vara that is believed to have such a soteriological power, as a s?tvika being. Sattvagu?a is related to ai?varya; ??vara is the most s?tvika being. Therefore, ??vara is, according to Vy?sa, considered as a supreme being of ai?varya. In Yogas?tra, ??vara is depicted as a personal God who is the guru containing within himself the seed of wisdom. ??vara in the form of personal God is, according to V?caspatimi?ra, beyond the dichotomy of dharma and adharma, all phenomenal forms, space and time, sensual pleasures. According to Vijn?nabhik?u, ??vara is understood as partly belonging to prak?ti and partly to puru?a. The all-knowing power of ??vara as appeared in the Yogas?tra is , according to Vy?sa, not innate in ??vara but an acquired capability, and ??vara is such a personal God who reveals himself in the form of wisdom for the sake of the salvation of the puru?a in the mundane world. The personal God with such a power and function is, contends V?caspatimi?ra, named as ?iva and ??vara and is, according to Vijn?nabhik?u, considered as Brahman, Antry?min, Param?tman in Ved?nta. The buolute as such a personal God is conceived as Kapilanta.V?caspatimi?ra as well as Vijn?nabhik?u Especially Vijn?nabhik?u holds that Kapila as Svaya?bh? is an absolute being incarnated as a ??i having created the conscious mind with his own yogic power, in which he is immanent and which he governs. In connection with the notion of representation of ??vara in the form of O?, Vy?sa is of the view that such a representation is in nature timeless and eternal. According to V?caspatimi?ra, O? inspires a yogi that he is blessed by God and in effect attains samprajn?tasam?dhi and asamprajn?tasam?dhi. Meanwhile, Vijn?nabhik?u holds that the inspiration in terms of the meaning of ??vara through the chanting of O? stands for the path of bhaktiyoga as well as the path of jn?nayoga. The path of devotion consists in becoming one with Brahma by way of concentration of the mind on the latter. The path of knowledge consists in meditating on the true self being conscious of Brahma.
