This thesis was drawn up to inquire into a new direction of Janghyunkwang(張顯光) Research in the field of the historical science. As one of the scholars representing Yeongnam Academic cirdes(嶺南學派) in early 17th century, Jang, Hyun-kwang won a popularity from Sarim(士林) as a mountain-forest politician(山林) after lnjo's enthronement and cultivated a literary group amounting to more than 300 scholars from Seoul, Chungcheongdo(忠?道), and north of Hwanghaedo(黃海道) and even up to Pyongando(平安道). However, in contrast with such a historical position of Jang, Hyun-kwang, the research on him and Yeohyun School in the field of Korean history can be said to be in its infancy now. For the inquiry into a new direction as to J ang, Hyunkwang research, this thesis digged into this subject in three points of view as follows:
First, I'd say that there should be an expansion of consciousness of the relationship between Jang, Hyun-kwang and Nammyung School(南冥學派). Up to now, the general consciousness that there is hardly any relationship between the two people is dominant, but the Nammyung-based elements connoted in Jang, Hyungkawng's disposition, his relationship with Jeong, In-hong that deserves to be dwelt upon and close exchange between lang, Hyun-kwang's descendants and Nammyung-circle personnel, etc. mean that lang, Hyunkwang and Nammyung school didn't exist separately at all.
In this thesis, this writer tried to find a clue to get the bilateral relationship much closer. Second, as for the issue of the consciousness of a scholastic mantle of lang, Hyunkwang and Yeohyun school(旅軒學派), it is what is called 'Hanyeosibi(寒旅是非)' controversy as to whether Jeonku(鄭述) and anghyunkwang were in relationship of master and pupil] that stands at a definite point.
This thesis brought forward the necessity of having a discussion about 'Hanyeosibi' in the eyesight and position that are newer and close to reality of that period . Another point in dispute of the consciousness of a school mantle is 'Buryusaseungron(不由師承諭), argument that there is no specific relation of master succession between them] which directly connects ]anghyunkwang's school mantle to 'Kongmaengjujeong(孔孟程朱), Confucius, Mencius, Jeongja, Chu-tz].
This research pointed out that this issue is also coupled with 'Hanyeosibi' and thus it cannot be overlooked at all in doing research on not only a school mantle but also Janghyungkwang's learning and idea.
Third, this research made a point of the pragmatic trend of Yeoheonhak. Until recently, lang, Hyunkwang's socio-political idea[statecraft theory] was grasped as an abstract-ideological general theory void of a substantial alternative, and toadyism for China, but this thesis has views on compilation of a topography in order to find out Yeohyunhak's pragmatic tendency.
Thus, this research found out that the topography compiled mostly by literary personnel had no flaws in pointing out Yeohyunhak's pragmatic trend and 'Yeohyunhak' represented a unique trend of learning of the coastal area of the Nakdong river(洛東江) enough to take its position as Hanyeo [Jeongku & JanghyunkwangJ common scholastic mantle.
