In previous studies on his learning, many researchers have claimed that Yeoheon`s statecraft merely provided with ideal and abstract stances, and that it disregarded both social realities and historical tradition of his own country in the light of sinocentrism. By criticizing these previous researches, this paper examines a practical aspect of Yeoheon Chang Hyun-kwang`s learning. My approach is based upon a research paper that reexamines the characteristics of Yeoheon`s learning by inquiring into his compilation of geographies and concerns on fengshui.
Yeoheon paid more special attention not only to current issues, but also moral practices of human beings than any other contemporary Confucian scholars. Based upon Confucian view of the world, he had not only built his comprehensive academic system, but also sought for solution to overcome contemporary problems. Through Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, especially, Yeoheon actualizes more practical aspect of his learning by focusing on reconstruction of social order via moral practices. By taking a look at concrete realities of local communities, he made the contents of his learning worth, and tried to pay attention to recovery of traditional culture as well as social order. Such efforts are key elements to highlight the practical aspect of his learning. After his death they come to fruition by his followers who devoted themselves into various cultural businesses Thus, they can be evaluated as certain momentum to revitalize new academic trend of neo-Confucian culture in Yeongnam area. 1n short, my paper will comprehensively examine the practical characteristics of Yeoheon`s learning by critically reviewing previous researches.
