The purpose of this article is to show the ways in which the book of Jeremiah took up the concept of false prophet, enlarged its connotations, and adopted it as one of the more available and important means in order to preclude particular social and religious behaviors, from the perspective of redaction criticism.
In the book of Jeremiah, the false prophets are defined by 4 kind" of formulas which use the word ??? as follows: ??? ???? (to prophesy in falsehood), ????? ???? ???? ??? (the prophet who prophesies in My name falsehood), ??? ??? ? (to prophesy falsehood to), ??? ??? (to make falsehood). The first formula is used to define the false prophets whose prophecies are suggested to be what the people wanted to hear(Jer. 5:30-31}. In this case the so-called false prophets are seen as a part of leaders in Judah. The texts using the second formula(Jer 14:13-16; 23:25-27, 32; 29:8-9}, without presenting the contents of false prophecy, criticize mainly the wrong means such as 'vision(????) and divination(???), idolatries(????), and the deceit of their heart(???? ??), which the false prophet would use to get oracles.
While these first two formulas try to define some attitudes and means of oracle as false prophets' without presenting the detailed contents of prophecy, the texts with the third formula(Jer. 27:9-10, 14-16; 29:21, 31) clearly show the contents of the so-called false prophecy, which is falsified according to its contents. The falsified prophecies all strongly opposed that Babylonia would destroy Judah and Jerusalem and that the victory of Babylon was the will of the Lord. The accusation against these falsified prophecies in Jeremiah can be understood properly in terms of the social context of the Babylon exile community.
In the texts with fourth formula(Jer, 6:13-14; 8:10-11), the prophets, who prophesied in order to earn economic profit with their prophecies, are falsified. And these texts use the wrong means of prophecy to falsify certain oracles and combine the criticism against the false prophetic mediums with the criticism against certain prophecies.
On the base of this observation, it is immediately suggested that the concept of falsehood had a special significance in the book of Jeremiah. In conclusion, using directly the various formulas of falsification, the redactors produced an edition of Jeremiah to serve their own purpose in the exilic political struggles for power in the community.
