Traditional analyses of 1 Cor 14:22-25 have not been able to solve the problems of interpreting, especially the crux interpretum of v.22. There is the inconsistence between v.22 and v.23-25. In v.22a, Paul says that Tongues are a sign for the unbelievers, but in v.23-25, Paul gives the example that Tongues are a sign for the believers. Otherwise, in v.22b, Paul says that Prophecy is a sign for the believers, but in v.23-25, Paul gives the concrete example that Prophecy is a sign for the unbelievers.
Although many scholars have attempted to solve this inconsistency in many ways, it may be still unsolved. This article attempts to solve it in the ways of the Paul’s Quote ? Rebuttal rhetoric. Paul quotes his opponent’s asserts, and rebuts them in his first letter to the Corinthians. This rhetorical pattern is found in many passages, especially in 1 Cor 14:34-35 which is so called “the silence of the women,” as well as in 1 Cor 6:12-13, 10:23, and 14:22-25. Shortly, v.22 is not Paul’s assertions but his opponent’s. Paul just quotes his opponent’s claims in v.22.
There are two different groups in the Corinthian community; the Tongues-group and the Prophecy-group. The Tongues-group asserts that Tongues are a useful sign for evangelizing the unbelievers. Paul quotes their claims in v.22, and rebuts their weaknesses of assertions, and insists his opinion that Prophecy is more useful for evangelizing the unbelievers to support the Prophecy-group. Although Paul have little more supported the Prophecy-group, Paul’s ultimate goal is that the Prophecy-group is orderly coexisting with the Tongues-group (14:40).
