In early Koryo dynasty, Consanguineous marriage was prevalent within Koryo royal family. In this case, Empress accepted surname of mother. This custom was biginned from Daemok empress, wife of King Gwangjong. But as a matter of fact, Empresses accepted surname of King Taejo,s wives. For example, Huneui empress, wife of King Gyungjong, accepted surname of grandmother, King Taejo,s wife. But King Hyunjong's empresses accepted surname of mother absolutely in case of consanguineous marriage.
The reason that empress accepted surname of mother was what keep hide consanguineous marriage against chinese. The other reason was weakness of King Taejo,s regal power. In that time The power of local gentry was very strong. Therefore King Taejo married daughters of local gentry for borrowing their,s power. In case that daughter of King Taejo married the other son of King Taejo, She accepted surname of mother. Surname of her mother mea ned surname of local gentry. The eighth King, Hyunjong was grandson of King Taejo. Therefore he imitated grandfather's several policies. What his empress accepted surname of mother was the one of imitation of King Taejo's policies. The custom that empress accepted surname of mother was the only one in period of korean history.
