Arisima Takeo's 『ARU ONNA』 was published with a new title 『ARU ONNANO GRIMPUSE』 in ?『SHIRAKABA』 for the first time in 1911. By 1913, the first sequel was completed followed by the second sequel in 1919. This work was not only a masterpiece of Arisima, it was considered a masterpiece of Japan's modern literature and the top bestseller of its time.
As the winner piece of MAEIL SINBO's novel competition, Gaejoo Park's 『SOON AE BO』 was chosen for serial publication from January to June of 1939, and it was published as a short novel in October that same year. Soon after the SOON AE BO publication, a thousand copies of this short novel was sold in just 15 days. This was the Korea's best-selling literary work before the emancipation, therefore, this novel carries a great significance.
『SOON AE BO』's OKRYUN and 『ARU ONNA』's YOKO are characters of exceptional beauty, and they share similar 〈NEW EDUCATION〉 backgrounds.
The major focus points of the comparison between the two characters are similar time periods, both the best sellers of its time, and the lifestyles and love of the two heroines well beyond their times. This paper will analyze the and lovlifestyle e of the two heroines with 〈new woman〉 and 〈modern girl〉 points of views.
This paper will discuss the Korean and Japan's 〈new woman〉 as well as the 〈modern girl〉, the term which may have been derived from 〈new woman〉. We will focus on different aspects of 〈new woman〉 and 〈modern girl〉 to compare and contrast the two heroines, YOKO and OKRYUN.
