Throughout my teaching of the design and creation of work to students with hearing impairments, who are often presumed to have difficulties in understanding abstract concepts, I attempt to explore how students form understandings about abstract concepts.
While supervising students, r try to avoid providing them with information directly linked to conclusions, and guide them toward goals by promoting an understanding of abstract elements such as directivity of thoughts. At the design concept formation stage, students are encouraged to notice the collective characteristics of cases by grouping individual instances to help facilitate the adoption of macro perspectives. At the idea formation stage, students are encouraged to generate several orientations from the common aspects of grouped ideas, and to understand the qualities of their own ideas. At the design decision stage, I provide guidance focusing on situational settings that allow students to make self evaluations based on the consistency of the designs with concepts. Despite immaturity in their completed works, these approaches help them obtain a certain level of accomplishment.
