The purpose of this article is to analyse the roles and characters of fairy-tale fantasticality in Vladimir Voinovich's Novel The Life and The Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin.
This work creates a fantasy world that functions on two levels. The first level of fantasy is satire that constantly punctures Soviet rnythrnaking by means of satiric devices. The second level of fantasy is a source of cultural nourishment by drawing on the familiar world of Russian fairy-tales. In particular, fairy-tale fantasticality was applied to illuminate life in Russia during a crucial time in history.
Inspired by Gogol's talent in fairy-tale fantasticality usage, Voinovich uses the device in Chonkin not only to satirically play upon Soviet society and system, but also to recover the traditional value of Russia's past.
Finally, the characters of fairy-tale fantasticality in Vladimir Voinovich's Novel can be described as follows:
1. Fairy-tale fantasticality has two faces: critical power (satirical functions) and will for recovery (protecting functions).
2. Fairy-tale fantasticality often has displayed through the description of the ambiguity of time. These ambiguities destroy the distinction of fantasy and reality while attracting the attention of readers. The ambiguous description of time is also in accord with Voinovich's educational intention.
3. Much of Chonkin's fairy-tale fantasticality effect comes from a series of misunderstanding and acts resulting from mistaken identity. Mistaken identity is a very important element causing the invasion of fairy-tale fantasticality to reality.
4. Fairy-tale fantasticality also provides the structural framework and thematic inspiration (final intention of the writer) for Chonkin. By showing a general distortion of Soviet society and system, Voinovich argues that the best simple and plain thing(or people) is the best worthy thing(or people).
