The examination of the Archbishop Roh Ki Nam is very important not only for recovering history of Catholic in South Korea, but also for modem Korean history itself, since he had continued to involve in Korean politics since 1945. He had maintained close relationship with former prime minister John M. Chang since the colonial period and had significant influences to the second republic of which prime minister was Mr. Chang.
However, his activity and idea after 1950 was not illuminated by academia as well as catholic church. According to newspapers, journals and American government documents, his political and social activity was not so active due to his uncomfortable relation with President Rhee Syng Man, compared to his role before the establishment of ROK in 1948. He played a great role since 1960, and deeply involved in political and social event, including extending catholic in education and medical service and reviving Kyunghyang Newspaper.
These activities could not continue to be done because of the May coup in 1961. The coup leaders criticized and prosecuted leaders of the second republic and catholic leaders including the archbishop Roh were automatically daunted. Moreover, the archbishop Roh was frequently investigated on the suspicion of several issues. which were not possible to make reality clear now without new sources. According to newspapers, one of main problems between him and the Park government was population planning. He was retired in the middle of 1960s shortly after investigation of him by prosecutor's office, but the main reason is not clearly examined yet. In order to analyze not only his thought, but also Catholic Church's role in modern Korean history, to find new sources including interviews is the first and foremost mission for the future research.
