Russian nominal constructions differ from English ones in their lack of determiners, having no article. However, the lack of determiners is compensated for by other morphosyntactic strategies, such as the genitive of negation and the optional agreement of numeral phrases, in which specificity plays a critical role. These morphosyntactic phenomena have been separately analyzed in the literature, with a focus on the scope of negation, the headness of constituents, quantification floating, etc. In my paper, I posit that although there is no independent grammatical category that indicates specificity in Russian, the language utilizes two different types of Nominal Construction to denote specificity and that the aforementioned phenomena are in fact the results of the distinct construction meanings.
I have shown that in languages such as English that utilize the numeral conceptualization strategy, which iconically reflects entities’ properties, the number and specificity of a referent are also grammatically marked. In contrast, in languages that do not denote specificity and recognize a specific referent as a kind, not as a concrete entity, such as Chinese and Korean, neither number nor specificity is grammatically marked. This is because languages of the latter type employ quantitative conceptualization, i.e., they recognize referents as kinds, regardless of referents’ specificity. Quantitatively conceptualized nominal phrases in these languages do not have concrete referents, whose number and definiteness can be marked. Russian employs numeral conceptualization. Thus, in this language we can predict that grammatical marks of definiteness as well as those of number will exist. I propose that while in Russian the specificity or definiteness of a referent is not grammatically marked, the specificity is marked as a construction semantic feature, and two separate construction types should be distinguished for the nominal constructions.
