This article explores strategies of demythologization exhibited in Heungbeop (興法; raising Buddhism(佛法)) and 「Tapsang (塔像; a stupa and a statue of the Buddha)」 in 〈Samgukyusa〉.
First of all, this paper examined the reasons of mythologization and found the following three. One is the matter of the amount of information, and if a person has a little information, he may absolutize a certain fact and show overconfidence in it. Next, the fear resulted from the mortality of men leads to mythologization for the desire to overcome it easily. Lastly, if a person desperately wants to defeat his opponent in a competition, a victory for one side is approved excessively and he gets mythologized. Like this, once ‘ignorance, terror, or conflict’ triggers mythologization, efforts to get over the three lead to demythologization.
Next, according to the result of examining the aspects of demythologization shown in 〈Samgukyusa〉, there were three methods employed: correction of the ignorance, overcoming of the terror, and intervention in the conflict. First, correction of the ignorance was performed by choosing reasonable data. In the case of 〈Sundojoryeo (順道肇麗; Sundo was the first who transmitted Buddhism to Goguryeo)〉, for instance, among historical books or Seungjeon (僧傳; a monk’s turning point), it selects the former as opposing the latter seemingly contributing to raising divinity to enhance reasonability. Second, overcoming of the terror was conducted in the direction to be cautious about superstition. For example, in the relationship between Yeomchok and King Beopheung, 〈Samgukyusa〉 chose to describe them equally instead of adopting mythologization of Yeomchok. Third, intervention in the conflict was realized by driving to the co-winning of the two in the competition. Though character pairs like Misi/Jinja or Nohilbudeuk/Daldalbakbak display front and rear or superiority and inferiority, they all reach to the same goal eventually. Taking such description, it narrows the gap between the two.
