During the Joseon Dynasty, the “Samgukyusa” book was regarded as a heretical historical record according to the philosophical system of Chu Hsi and Neo-confucianism. Its contents were regarded as mere superstition and myth. However, Samgukyusa began to become a widely quoted text in efforts that had been underway since the 17th century to restore and firmly reestablish the ancient history of the country. In the process of establishing the founding myth of Gojoseon, which marked the beginning of the country, and ancient history including the three kingdoms and Gaya, Samgukyusa was treated equally to other domestic and Chinese historical records.
Scholars of the Realist School of Confucianism (Silhak) also found the origins of various traditions, including jeolgi (節氣; 24 subdivisions of the year) and seongssi (姓氏; family name), in Samgukyusa. The book also contributed to restoring the history of Buddhism in the country. Its contents on “Euihae (義解),” “Tapsang (塔像),” and “Heungbeop (興法)” provided the foundation for establishing the history of Buddhism in the country, which had largely been missing up to that point. Although the truthfulness of “Samgukyusa” was criticized and questioned in records written about Buddhist temples in the 17th and 18th centuries, the book clearly contributed to establishing the history of Buddhism in the Joseon Dynasty.
