This research aimed to examine if, and if so, how message quality and the individual's opinion extremity might moderate the effects of the exposure to disagreement in online discussion. In a 2 (opinion congruency between the message and one's own issue position: congruent vs. incongruent) × 2 (message quality: high vs. low) × 3 (opinion extremity: high vs. medium vs. low) between-subjects experiment (N=197), participants read others' postings in an online discussion forum, concerning the corporatization of national universities and capital punishment. For the former, those reading low-quality messages incongruent with their own opinion showed greater prejudice against their opponents than others, and the exposure to disagreement significantly lowered empathy with the opponents only among those holding extreme positions. For the latter, low-quality messages amplified the prejudice against the opponents, but only among those whose opinions were highly extreme. Overall, opinion extremity was negatively associated with the ambivalence of opinion and the empathy toward the opponents, while positively correlated with the prejudice against the opponents.
