Correctional accident obstructs functions of correctional administration. It includes suicide, violence, death from disease in prison, disturbance, conflagration and so on. Correctional accident interrupts the correction and rehabilitation of prisoners, and has a demoralizing influence upon public order.
The study investigats related issues as follows ; (1) the type and cause of correctional accidents, (2) the actual condition of correctional accidents, (3) process of correctional accidents and their problems, (4) the measures against correctional accidents, (5) preventive policies.
According to official statistical data, the present situation on correctional accidents are as follow ;
(1) correctional accidents increase over the last 10 years.
(2) violence is the most frequent correctional accidents, and especially violence to the staffs increase.
(3) correctional accidents are mostly caused by accidental impulse or discontent.
(4) Most of accident maker is in the age of 20-30s.
The study suggested the following policies for resolving related problems ;
(1) arrangement of operation manual for precise and prudent management.
(2) enactment standard of punishment to correction officer in case of accidents.
(3) improvement of facilities and equipment.
(4) distinctive treatment to prisoner's trait.
(5) strict investigation in correctional accidents, and sharing the accident cases.
(6) improving programs for the correction and rehabilitation.
