The aim of this study is 1) to examine prevalence of sexting activities, 2) to compare attitude towards sexting behaviors between sexters and non-sexters, 3) to investigate latent reasons for sexting behaviors, and 4) to suggest policy implications for prevention and intervention of sexting activities among South Korean youth. This study, first, reviewed sexting incidents and judical precedents of sexting activities within the United States. Second, this study attempted to define 'sexting' based on information retrieved from the media as well as legal cases. Third, this study hypothesized relationship between sexting and six variables relevant to sexting behaviors. Those variables included punishment experienced, attitude towards sexting, peer pressure, prior delinquency, social control and self-control. Using 1,612 cases collected from a cross-sectional multistage cluster sampling, this study found that 1) 20% of youth engaged in sexting, 2) sex, age, school type, and family SES were not related to sexting, 3) social control factor was not related to sexting, 4) punishment experienced, attitude, peer pressure, prior delinquency, and self-control were positively related to sexting behavior. The study found that peer pressure was the most significant factor affecting sexting behavior, and punishment and prior delinquency were the second most important factor affecting sexting behavior. Based on the various important findings, this study suggested three policy implications for prevention and intervention of sexting activities among South Korean youth.
