The selection and socialization processes have been the two prominent perspectives to explain the peer influence on juvenile delinquency. However, recent evidence suggests that the influence of peer effect and self-control may be more complicated than previous researches assumed. Using the data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, the present research sought to capture the differential influence of peer pressure and self-control over time. The results of parallel process latent growth curve model demonstrated that both processes take place during adolescence. Additionally, unconditional and conditional growth curve models were employed to compare relative significance and magnitude of selection and socialization processes. Comparison of coefficients revealed that selection process had stronger effect on delinquency during early adolescence, whereas the socialization exerted greater influence at later adolescence. The findings call for developmentally sensitive juvenile crime prevention strategy.
