Shakespeare, who had revealed his consistent concern about male anxiety on female sexuality through numerous cuckold discourses, dramatically explores the theme in Othello. Othello entangled by Iago's linguistic web is capitalized by paranoid jealousy, which drives him into 'horrible fancies' and makes him interpret all signifiers related with Desdemona wrongly. All of his interpretation goes beyond its object and meets to his imagination of Desdemona's faithlessness.
Desdemona is defenceless about her innocence in the patriarchal society where women are deprived of their voices and are coerced into silence. Othello would not listen to Desdemona and Emilia and opens his ears only to Iago. Most of other male characters in this play shows severe repulsion toward women's tongues. Iago criticizes his wife's talkativeness in Act Ⅱ and Cassio fears Bianca will rail in the street else. Suffocating Desdemona symbolizes male oppression to female voice metaphorically.
Shakespeare suggests two pivotal causes which drives main characters into destruction in this tragedy. The one is male paranoia on female infidelity which mirrors their own fears of women's erotic power. The other is the viciously abusive power of language to manipulate the reality. As Othello shares patriarchal assumptions of female sexuality, he believes Iago's honesty (straightforwardness) instead of Desdemona's honesty(chastity). Representing the tragedy of men's misunderstanding of women, Shakespeare casts doubts on patriarchal concepts and adequacy of language as a means of communication at the same time.
