The meaning of the medieval morality play in the development of English drama lies in its particular role as a bridge between religious drama and secular drama. Unlike the popular belief in the moralities as an exclusively medieval drama, it is said that English audiences went on expecting and accepting moral advice from their playwrights in the public theaters until long after the death of Elizabeth I. Shakespeare's mighty contemporary Christopher Marlowe used a morality interlude in Dr. Faustus where the Seven Deadly Sins appeared.
Though Shakespeare's plays are greatly superior to the morality plays, many critics have proclaimed Shakespeare's indebtedness to the morality tradition. Shakespeare's Othello is a drama peopled with morality characters. lago is a refined morality character, Vice, while the counterpart of the Angel or Good in the moralities is the virtuous Desdemona. Naturally, both Iago and Desdemona, as they carry the moralities allegorical traits, do not change throughout the play. It is only Othello who in undergoing a hellish agony, awakens to a new realization of Iago the Devil and Desdemona, whom he thought Devil, the Angel. This study attempts to read Othello in Morality tradition, substituting Iago and Desdemona as Vice and Angel, and explores its impact on Othello who can be another Everyman in Moralities.
From a thematic point of view, Othello is in search of a double object : Desdemona's love and military glory. In this quest, Iago acts as adversary and Desdemona as helper. However, Iago as the supreme artist of evil, succeeds in distorting Othello's vision into seeing him, Iago as helper and Desdemona as adversary. Thus, mere appearance overwhelms ultimate truth in the eyes of Othello. Iago, Vice, is seen as the helper and Desdemona, Angel, as the adversary.
Othello is not the tragedy of an innocent husband who is badly deceived. It is the drama of a man who, like all men, is both good and evil, and who reaches for the absolute good. Othello's fate does not have alternatives other than to be caught like a fly in the very complex and refined web woven by sophisticated Vice, in the person of Iago. Othello's confusion and mistake can be attributed to man's pride and the devil's cunning as in the First Garden. As such, Othello is another 'Everyman' ,the prototype of the man who has a simple and gullible mind, and is caught in life's serious dilemma.
