Cui-Hao(zi unknown 703?-754), a contemporary of Wang-Wei and Gao-shi, was one of the major poets in the High Tang. After passing the jin-shi examination in 723, Cui was appointed to a low provincial post.
Thereafter he held various capital posts. He died In 754, before the rebellion. There are 42 poems ascribed to Cui in the Quan Tang Shi. This paper aims to analyze his poetry, which can be divided into three groups :
The first consists of all the poems whose topics were on female, including the disclosures of the pleasure and empty spirit of noble women, the descriptions of great sadness of abandoned court ladies and deep anxiety of boudoir ladies who were separated from their beloved ones and true love between Jacks and Gills of the Southeast. We can figure out that living in the peaceful and glorious time of Kai-yuan and Tian-bao, Cui tried to focus on the social absurdities and contradictions rather than ‘the High Tang's Spirit’ that was particular in that time.
The second group contains the poems on frontier, including the expressions of Cui's great ambitions for rendering distinguished services to his country, extollment of patriotism, militarism of the frontier soldiers, and descriptions of the strange customs of different tribes living in the border areas as well as the curious and beautiful landscapes in the frontier.
The third group comprises poems on landscape, including the descriptions of beautiful landscapes in modern Zhe-jiang, Hu-bei, Shan-xi and so on expressing the homesickness felt in remote lands, adorations for the respectable men of ancient times, and complaints of his political misfortune.
His poems have been evaluated mainly by the frontier poetry, but I think it's a bit biased against his full ranges of topics. Especially, his characteristic of his poetry concerning ladies and landscape poetry should be taken into consideration in the history of Tang poetry.
