Zu Yong, a poet, was a native of Luoyang Some scholars say that he was born around 699 and died around 846 But that's not reliable, because there's no supporting biographical data Strictly speaking, it's impossible to find out the date of his birth and death exactly, and it is only supposed that he was born m 690s and died in and after 842 by some records
Zu Yong was early member of the capital group of the Kat Yuan, a close friend of Wang Wei, Lu Xiang etc Zu passed the metropolitan examination in 724 After that he lived m retirement or engaged upon his restless travels, seeking the social connections necessary to gam public recognition and high rank But he couldn't accomplish his desire in his life, and the sorrow of his own personal situation had made a great influence on his writing poems
There are thirty-four poems (except for 3 poems ascribed to the Mid-Tang poet Miao Fa) in Zu Yong surviving corpus They are primary in pentasyllabic regulated verse The contents of Zu's poems can be drvided into three parts 1) Personal correspondence poems 2) Natural poems 3) Poems on historical events
The general mood of his poems is characterized by the sadness that's from his miserable situation This is different from the buoyancy by L1 Bo, the melancholy by Du Fu, the elegance by Meng Hao-ran, and the exquisiteness by Wang Wei.
Not only he didn't reach the stage of social context and artistic technique where L1ㆍDu, WangㆍMeng etc were, but also there are small number of his works. Despite of that, his lonesome message in style contributed to colorful and glorious aspects of High Tang poetics and also made him one of major poets of High Tang, which is just the true worth of his poems in histories of Tang poetry
