Mme de Lafayette was very interested in religious problem at the middle of her social and literary life. As it were, she drew religious area in her own work. Sadness, gloom, pessimism are tones that dominates her works and she knew human's imperfectness perfectly well from her own private experience which she did the conversion at the end last few years in her life under the faith leader abbe de Rance and abbe Du Guet's influence. By these points, we should consider about her religious emotion, especially inversion in her mind.
Subsequently, we may view the methodology in this paper. Of course, as we know through her letter, especially the death of M. La Rochefoucauld, her intimate colleague year 1680 became the turning point of her intercourse social life, and reveal some aspects of her religious self-reflection. So to speak, several colleagues' deaths caused her own physical and spiritual sufferings which must announce the decline of her life on earth and this made her to realize human's woefulness and as a result, she turned towards the powerful God.
We confirmed that she personally experienced religious problem before La Rochefoucauld dies in treatise. In the meantime, last some pages of her novel works are thought in case that heroine Mme Cleves changes of heart. Confirmed much resemblant points between them from this parallel lines, we saw their change of hearts in a traditional Christian frame. This is the phenomenon that can be explained by religious custom at that time.
Lastly, the conclusion may become, preferably, a newly advanced problem. Actually, the pessimism which stroke in all the works, and her interest about tenacious moral of Jansenism, her friendship with jansenists colleagues particularly with Mme de Sevigne, and her selection of faith leaders connected with jansenism, could consider to make Mme de Lafayette as a "augustinienne'(Saint Augustin believer), which could become a bundle of real facts which show the jansenism's effect about her religious change from a female writer to a recluse. But, the problem about her retirement. and her change of heart have to be approached more concretely in the problem about God's favor and christians' moral which was a big theological subject of 17th century in France, century of Saint Augustin.
