It has been usually thought that history and philosophy of history could' not be compatible, for the former is microscopic, while the latter macroscopic on the method of study. But we are pleased to see that there is a good dialogue between them recently.
Contemporary view of history can not think the linkage between past and future, any more. Is is desirable for the historical science to turn: aside future at all? Of coure, the object of the study of a historian's is that of past. Historian, nevertheless is not able to separate the fact-interpretation and the fact-value. For history can be written by one who accepts: the sense of direction.
The view of history was initiated from the patristic theology of history-in the Madiaeval Christian Church Fathers' who saw that the human, history proceeds for the ultimate goal with a unifying significance among-past, present and future alike. From this point of view, Augustin is the-first philosopher of history in the Western Europe. He sees the universal'
history in the teleological point of view. There has been so many a debate-on what is the fundamental dynamic power of history. Christianity stands: on the theocratic historical view that the world history is dominated by-the Providence of God's.
The significance of the appearance of christianity marks the end of classical antiquity, the new era of the Western European Civilization, and'. the new original age of the history, as well.
The purpose of the thesis is to research the interpretation of the Mediaeval christian view of history and the influence of classical thoughts on Augustin.
The characteristics of Augustin's thoughts are as follows:
First, the content of his thought consists in christianity itself. But the plot of it derives from the effects of Pagan Antiquity such as Platon and Virgil, in particular.
Second, he authors books for the purpose of the Apologetics as one of the Church Fathers.
Third he begins the Philosophy of History in his 'City of God' for the first time. He attempts to establish the hermeneutics of history. His ,achieve ment is to find and teach such things as the teleological eschatol-ogy, meaning, goal, direction of future in history, the ultimate meaning of time and the dynamical criticism of the then society for the human race.
