For most confucian scholars of Joseon, sharing the philosophical and intellectual vision was an important part of friendship. What bound them together was the congenial spirit as the fellow thinkers who follow the same path. Artistic taste or literary disposition was less of a matter in forming friendship. However, in reality, finding a friend who share the same intellectual vision was not an easy thing. For this reason, people preferred to communicate with the sages of the past through reading. This worked as the cultural basis to encourage “the idea of befriending the people from the past.”
In comparison to this, Heo Gyun displays a different aspect. On the spiritual level, he also speaks of “the idea of befriending the people from the past.” At the same time, he shares friendship with the people of different social status with unreserved attitude in reality. He became friends with the sons of concubines who were lower in social standing and also ginyeo, the female entertainer/artist who held the lowest rank of society. Friendship with these underprivileged people or the minorities reveal a new form of relationship that was formed by Heo Gyun. He valued the common ground in artistic and literary taste and stressed the righteous spirit in friendship. In this sense, he displays the earlier form of the ethics of friendship that became more prominent among the confucian intellectuals in the 18th century Joseon.
