Images are rich in materials about the mentality, tendency, and temperament of man and society, which are important when writing about history. They also reflect, directly or indirectly, the rituals and morals of various communities, as well as the daily life and the society of the past. In short, images reproduce the past. Essential prerequisites for historical interpretation and the application of image materials would be their exact sources and analysis to the aspects outside of the images per se. These include their date, intention, subjects, writers, and so on. In this context, the historians' efforts that regard and treat images as original materials are also as very important as the character materials. Symbolic or allegorical images, however, have problems in terms of their reality or objectiveness (character materials have the same problems from a historians' point of view). One way to overcome these problems and to be regarded as materials depends on the historians' investigation and efforts (for example, comparison and critical analysis of materials). This is a typical process through which historians treat materials and regard them as facts, contrary to what art historians do, and which makes it different from art history.
