A noteworthy one of the tendencies in the studies of Western History in Korea during two years of 2011 and 2012 is to consider again the relation between ‘fashion’ and ‘agenda’ in scholarship. It is natural, in a sense, for historians to follow the scholar"s own academic fashion, but, without considering of which agendas are needed more, their fashion might lose its meaning. In other words, historians should not merely adhere to academism but always think of how their studies could suggest the prospective ways in every sense. Of course I would never deny the inner values of academic study but only place emphasis on a kind of the engagement or commitment of the intellectual including historians.
Recently, before and after 2007, the number of scholarly essays on Western History written in Korea tends, though gradually, to reduce. The most important of the reasons might be the decrease of young scholars. The present number of Korean Western historians is not sufficient to increase the amount of historian"s production. There has been several positive characteristics, in spite of such a quantitative retreat, in the past two years" scholarship. First, historians choose more various subjects of study. It means they research more broadly and deeply. Secondly, the concepts and methods of cultural history begin to vigorously apply to practical historical writings, beyond the level of theory, of various periods and countries. Lastly, as already stated, historians show more keen interests on the respect of "civic agenda" in their academic studies.
