This paper examines that the true nature of Japanese invaders being defeated by Daebark Yang in Unam combat in June 25, 1592 was false Japanese invaders who were runaway soldiers during the rebellion of Hanam Army and a band of thieves appeared in several districts.
When Imjinwaeran broke out, royal forces of Honam Province were mobilized in several times to be dispatched to other provinces, and especially after April 1592 a large scale of royal forces were mobilized in two times. Some soldiers in Sunchang and Okwa of Honam Province refused to be mobilized and revolted against the central government. The rebellion was narrowly suppressed, but many of the rebel forces ran away into Hoemun Mountain to become thieves and used to often appear in Hoemun Mountain and Noryung areas near Sunchang and Imsil.
In this situation, it was reported that Daebark Yang raised an army of 1,500 soldiers in the cause loyalty in Unam to attack Japanese invaders and achieved a brilliant success in battle killing about 1,000 Japanese invaders. This claim, however, can not be proved objectively because there were some doubts about Yang's whereabouts recorded in documents and because Japanese invaders could not enter into the interior of Jula Province such as Chonju and Imsil.
If Unam Combat actually happened, the forces which were claimed to be defeated by Yang must be false Japanese soldiers disguised as Japanese invaders. In addition, given their weapon and fighting power, they could not be Japanese army composed of Japanese samurai. Moreover, given the claim that the leader of Japanese soldiers appeared in Unam was Daenambi who already showed up in Sunchon in April, they must be the same band of thieves appeared in Sunchon and Galdam areas.
As a conclusion, the Daebark's Unam Combat was not the battle against Japanese invaders who entered into Jula Province in early Imjinwaeran, but the battle against false Japanese soldiers, a band of thieves who disguised themselves as Japanese army.
