The university has traditionally been the autonomous community of professors and students in pursuit of knowledge. However, this tradition is being challenged by corporate universities. This essay examines the corporatization of Korean universities in parallel with that of American universities.
Unlike most universities in the world, American universities are privatized and thereby corporatized. The corporatization of Korean universities comes from the fact that they have been modelled upon American corporate universities. Korean universities have been changed into corporations in three ways; corporation style management, profit making, and job-training institutionalization. As in American universities, the governing body of Korean universities has had to manage the institution economically, efficiently, and profitably with the limits of public financial support. Thereby, Korean universities have been transformed into business corporations. Korean entrepreneurs who have manipulated universities for profits, which is an officially illegal practice, are now seeking for the legitimation of such a practice by proposing laws that would enable them to privatize university properties and run for-profits universities. The most serious problem in corporatized Korean universities is seen in the transformation of normal universities into corporate universities per se, that is, job-training institutions for employees in a business corporation, as seen in the graduate program of mobile systems engineering at Sungkyunkwan university. The corporatization of Korean universities has resulted from the decline of nation-state and the rise of transnational corporate capitalism in the late 20th and early 21st century Korea. The university is losing its mission of autonomous and unlimited pursuit of knowledge, and hence is in ruins.
