The present article develops our understanding of the transformations at the Russian University happened since the fall of the Soviet Union. This article aims to contribute to finding the ‘marketization’ concept by offering a functional framework for analysis of the phenomenon of the changing universities. The article emphasizes importance of prior understanding of the ‘socio-entrepreneurial marketization’ rather than ‘commercial marketization’ of the Russian University. Thus, the article also provides the institutional analysis of the Russian private universities which contribute to developing the idea of the socio-entrepreneurial marketization of Russian University.
The Russian University is an important social institution taking care of heritage, accumulation and reproduction of scientific and professional knowledge, cultural treasures and norms. The transition to a market economy has affected Russian higher education in several ways: government funding dropped dramatically, a substantial deregulation of higher education, commercialization of the education market, and the explosive growth of higher education not accompanied by an increase in quantity. But the reform of higher education reflects demands of the role of university as a social institution.
The emergence and development of the private sector of higher education in Russia was not an easy process: the institutions were under the constant scrutiny of the legislative and executive branches. But nowadays private universities play a major role in the evolutionary transformation of the different universities, in the development of a civil society. As a whole Russian universities, especially private universities, through the socio-entrepreneurial marketization are trying to be an independent institution to take the responsibility for the state and society.
