This research is to examine through comparative research the similarities and differences of colonial experiences between Cuba and Puerto Rico. The research will consider the independence movements, the characteristics and the nature which the 2 countries underwent under Spanish colony. Research methods used comparative analysis.
Colonial experiences of Cuba and Puerto Rico were analyzed with individual colonial policies according to geopolitical characteristics, industrial development and colonial conditions which made the differences in the colonies. The independence movements in Cuba and Puerto Rico were analyzed with the Ten Year War in Cuba and Lares Uprising in Puerto Rico under the Spanish ruling.
The characteristics of the independence movements in Cuba and Puerto Rico were that although they broke out at the same period, they failed because of negative participation, the disruption of the Creoles and the lack of capacity in war. In addition, the independence movements of these two colonies depended on social and economic capacity accumulated by industrialization, economic growth and structural factors. the increasing social and economic conflicts and structured colonial exploitation resulting from industrialization acted as motives. Also the emancipation of black slaves was on important variable in the process of the independence movement.
