The purpose of this essay is to understand political and economic crisis between Walloon region and Flemish region in Belgium. Thus this essay is divided into two parts: 1. “Belgian economy and the regions' crisis” and 2. “Political structure and the regions' crisis”.
In the first part, we start by considering the following points: 1-1) Belgian Economy and the economic disproportion between both regions, 1-2) differentiation and crisis between the two regions.
Our first chapter will show that Flanders is de facto the richest region in the country. The Flemish who estimate they have been left aside in the past always claim less federal state involvment and more autonomy, notably in fiscal or social matter. French-speaking Wallons fear a big loss of financial transfers if cut from the Flemish region in their budget and that the Flemish claims put the Kingdom in pieces.
The second part is again divided into two chapters: 2-1) Communities and Regions' structures in Belgium, 2-2) From 2007 election to the current crisis.
The second part will make us understand that the geographical division in two territories doesn't reflect the reality of the language division of Belgium which is a mix of 4 different linguistic zones : French, Dutch, German and a bilingual zone.
Political and economical matters which lead to the crisis and the conciliation efforts are specifically linked to the political turmoil following the 2007 election till now.
