Theocritus' Idylls, which has been believed to be the first work of the pastoral literature, contains various talks of mirth and game along with light discussions on the belief in gods, among shepherds and shepherdesses. In Renaissance England, the pastoral literature came into a great vogue and many writers including Edmund Spenser were eager to write pastoral works in verse or prose on the basis of Christian allegory. Shakespeare made use of the pastoral forms, in either style as was necessary, in his comedies and romances.
In Shakespeare's pastoral areas, pacifistic spirit or pacific ism prevails, and the peace-loving spirit reveals itself in two ways: religious way and mythological one. In such works as The Merry Wives of Windsor and As You Like It, the shepherd-sheep relation is represented as the mechanism of protection and obedience, and the peace offering is observed as a sacrifice ritual for reconciliation and commune, each metaphorically. In such works as A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest, the figures, who control and preside their green worlds, assist and protect the helpless or get reconciled with their enemies, respectively in their territories.
The green world, however, does not always mean the geographically pastoral area. Pastoral area as it is geographically, the magic power does not work in it without the psychologically pastoral space experienced in one's mind. Reversely, even in the same city, if only one experiences the shepherd-sheep relation in any plot, one can get to the green world in which peace and protection are guaranteed. Actually we move to church from the world and to the world from church every Sunday or more often.
