This study analyzed the extent and changes in the intra-regional disparity between the major 3 Gangnam districts (represented by the three districts: Seocho, Gangnam, and Songpa) and the major 3 Gangbuk districts (represented by the three districts: Gangbuk, Dobong, and Nowon), using data for the period between 1995 and 2007.
The analysis results are the following: Overall, the population shift in the major 3 Gangnam districts was shown to be more remarkable than that in the major 3 Gangbuk districts. It was revealed that the levels of financial self-sufficiency of both districts got worse, while the disparity in financial self-sufficiency between the two groups of districts was widening over the period. The amount of waste disposition in the Gangnam districts increased more rapidly than that in the Gangbuk districts and, in terms of waste disposition per 1,000 persons, the level for the major 3 Gangnam districts stood three times higher than that for the major 3 Gangbuk districts. In types of dwellings, the portion of apartment buildings for the major 3 Gangbuck districts notably increased, and for the rate of home ownership, it slightly shrinked in the major 3 Gangnam districts, while it substantially increased in the major 3 Gangbuk districts. The numbers of hospital beds and medical personnel in the major 3 Gangnam districts were far higher than those in the major 3 Gangbuk districts, while in the number of private educational institutions a great difference was shown between the two groups of districts.
