3-D Animation, a cultural form of a digital environment, is a high value-added cultural industry of an entertainment that has characteristics shared by recipients and producers.
The Shrek, an animation that was given the Best Animated Feature Film Award in the 74th Academy Awards in 2002, is a de-Disneyland animation work that broke the existing animation framework and was parodied with the 21st century's popular sense.
This Study identified the inherent semiotics of the animated Shrek, the ambitious work of the Dream Works Animation L.L.C. that made its position solid as one of the cultural contents, through Greimas' semiotical analysis, and for the sake of the signification as signals, analyzed the characters by classifying it into the 3 layers, actant, actor and fiqures.
Through it, I found that the Shrek follows the method of storytelling(as actant) of the Disney animations' typical fairy tales as it is, the two conflicting structure of good and evil as shown in the classical epics and is consisted of the setting(appearance) of the main characters that reverse the classical narrative and theme of the fairy tales. Also it is recreated by popular sense well-matched with the post-modernism by parodying the most familiar scenes of the American actuality films and is estimated to be a work that developed the new genre in the animation.
It is believed that these are the outcome of the Dream Works' commercial strategy and endless investment and efforts and I think that if we would make our efforts by benchmarking such a good model case, the outlook for the Korean animation industry would be bright.
