The giant robot animation industry, which was born in Japan during the early 1960s and began to influence the Korean culture industry from the late 1960s, has continued for about four decades until the late 2000s when the live-action Hollywood movie Transformer took the theme to the movie screen. As a subgenre in the cultural industry in South Korea, giant robot animations thrived as a genre, and 63 movies of 48 series were released through cinema, TV, or video in 32 years from 1968 when 〈Hwang-geum Cheorin(A Golden Iron Man)〉 was released in theater until 2000 when 〈The Great Express Might Gaine〉 was aired on KBS. Therefore, in South Korea, giant robot animations are a genre that is shared and remembered by people currently in their 20s and 60s, and has influenced values of almost all age groups that are leading the society. For that reason, it is a suitable genre from which the culture code of Koreans can be deduced. In addition, as the industry has already passed a cycle from its birth to the current hibernation, it is a useful subject for looking into how the culture code of Koreans work in different steps in progress of a certain subject.
This study will first look into the significance of giant robot animations in Japan, in which the genre was created, and characteristics of the genre. And also, it will examine the difference in significance of giant robot animations in South Korea and Japan, as well as the history of giant robot animation contents in South Korea and the culture code of Koreans that is found in the overall culture industry.
