This paper tries to adopt a generational perspective on modem German history. The 'myth of youth' is an aspect of the political culture not only in the 20th century Germany, but also in the modem world as a whole. In the modernizing process youth was regarded not just as a stage of life cycle, but as synonym of the social alternative, renewal, resistance to convention. Thus the cult of youth became a common phenomenon in all modernizing countries. However, in many cases the myth of youth had two sides: cult and control of the youth generation coexisted, because the adult generation felt great anxiety over a potential of youthful rebellion. The German Social Democratic Party(SPD) during the Weimar Republic provides a typical example of the Janus-face of the modem myth of youth.
Out of the chaos of the post-war period ideas and practices of the bourgeois youth movement began to permeate the thinking of socialist youth generation. With the concepts of self-control and self-determination, they wished to discuss the burning political issues of the day and to have control over their own activities. This led to tension between the front and post-war generation of the socialist milieu and the reformist party executive. The SPD, officially stressed the importance of the youth generation as leaders of the future, worried about their radicalness and tried to control them. When in the late 1920s and 1930s the political controversies and generational conflicts became more bitter, the SPD forbade the activities of the juso, the organization of the young socialists. The case of the Weimar SPD proves that the first German republic failed to integrate its younger generation, and this was an element of its catastrophic end.
