Fu Ssu-nien is well known as a Chinese liberal and historian. In the context of his recognition of national problems and his attention to the Northeast, he was clearly strongly nationalistic and Sinocentric. In particular, he insisted that the Northeast, including the Korean peninsula, had been in the direct grip of Chinese imperial dynasties and actually subordinated in culture and politics to China.
This position stemmed from the threat of imperialistic invasion facing his nation. Fu Ssu-nien, fully realizing the national crisis and vigorously opposed to the imperialistic disruption and invasion of China, sought to resolve the national crisis through the creation of a strong national unity. This study examines some of the evidence demonstrating his development as an enthusiastic Chinese patriot and militant nationalist, Some researchers as well as many of his acquaintances have regarded Fu Ssu-nien as a liberal compared to Hu-Shi. However, he does not seem to have displayed the essential characteristics of a liberal, for he did not guarantee people's basic rights or seek to build a democratic political system. At the time, China was so threatened that Fu Ssu-nien took as his highest priority and most immediate task the defense of China through the achievement of a greater degree of national unity. Therefore, he focused on national problems in the pursuit of national salvation. Among the primary reasons for the failure of liberalism in China in the twentieth century was the fact that for intellectuals such as Fu Ssu-nien, liberalism yielded to nationalism.
In addition, this paper argues that Fu Ssu-nien's view of the Northeast, including the Korean peninsula within its boundaries, was based on traditional Sinocentrism. The pervasiveness of this attitude within Chinese culture is demonstrated by its predominance even among rational, analytical intellects such as Fu Ssu-nien. Moreover, Fu Ssu-nien, like many of his countrymen then and later, recognized the geopolitical, strategic, and economic importance of 'Manchuria'. The writings of Fu Ssu-nien therefore demonstrate the roots of China's Northeast Building Project as part of the wider project of building a modem nation-state.
