This article intends to explore the significance of the word "clumsiness(拙)," thereby illuminate not only a crucial aspect of the poetic world of Tu Fu but the background of the formation of the words of critical comment such as "limpidness"(淡) "leisureliness"(閑). Du Fu's usage of the word falls into three categories: first, the usage of the indication of the negative aspect of his character that is unskilled in conduct of life second, that of reference to affirmative life value third, that of the implication of a specific aesthetic value. This article considers Xianju-Fu or "Poetic Exposition on Leisurely Life" by Pan Yue and Dao De Jing as sources of the formation of the word in Du Fu's poems. Upon comparing the usage of the word by Tu Fu with that of Xianju-Fu, we readily come to find the extent to which the former is entirely modelled on the latter. Du Fu's case, however, shows some developments; he proceeds from the three basic usage of the word to evaluate poems. Du Fu's influence in the usage of the word is best exemplified by Yun Seon-do, who was eager to emulate Du Fu both in his literature and in life. But unlike Du Fu's case, his employment of the word is confined to refer to the first two of the three categories. As for the issue of whether Yun was directly influenced by Pan Yue or was indirectly influenced being filtered through Du Fu's lens, a closer comparison of Xianju-Fu and Yun's texts reveals the extent to which Yun, on the basis of Du Fu's overarching influence, directly received Pan's conception of the word "clumsiness."
