Historians of historiography explained that the relation between Annales and french structuralism was hostile. This assertion was based on Fernand Braudel's critique of Claude Levi-Strauss. However, there were many-sides figures and streams in the structuralism. Representatives of structuralism like Claude Levi-Strauss, Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan or Roland Barthes showed diversity of styles and tastes. Clauede Levi-Strauss, for example, defined the structuralism as a hard and fast system, but Roland Barthes regards it as a movement. If we don't consider multiplicities in the structuralism, we can't understand the relation between Annales and structuralism.
The relation between Lucien Febvre and Roland Barthes show a different aspect from that of Fernand Braudel and Claude Levi-Strauss. Roland Barthes was connected theoretically with Lucien Febvre. This historian's social history of literature has an enormous effect on the theory of critique of Roland Barthes. The work of Lucien Febvre, Le problema de l'incroyance au ⅩⅥe siecle: La religion de Rabelais (1942), provided some base of Roland Barthes's structuralist theory. The structuralism of Roland Barthes was not hostile to the history of Annales, which means another aspect of relation between Annales and structuralism, in other words some aspect of their close relation.
