In later years of his life, Akutagawa epitomized his view of art in his discussions of many artists and stressed that an artist should be devoted to manifesting his or her own poetic spirit. This study explored Akutagawa's concept of poetic spirit based on his remarks and examined how his poetic spirit was realized in his works. It was found that his unique poetic spirit, combined with his character, gave birth to diverse symbols and well-designed plots. In Akutagawa's own words, this was made possible by means of the artificial wings, yet impeccable use of his poetic spirit as a tool not just for creating fiction but also vividly describing the present can be attributed ultimately to his innate talent.
Akutagawa's poetic spirit was materialized in his earlier and middle novels based on legends and myths as a style called "fleeting emotions," which helped to present impressive scenes. It was materialized in his later non-story-centered novels based on first-person narration as a painting style that maximizes visual effects. In this way, the writer's poetic spirit was effectively utilized in presenting his own absurd themes as symbolic images for superbly artistic plots, regardless of whether his works were based on legends and myths or on first-person narration.
