Socratic citizenship is often regarded as an alternative model of contemporary citizenship that needs to deal with both fanaticism and disinterest in politics. Hannah Arendt, Gerald Mara and Dana Villa are three representative theorists who pay special attention to Socrates’ life and death, though in different tenors, in order to find an alternative model of citizenship. The paper examines first the claims of the three theorists. In doing so the paper notes the possibility that Socrates’ life is relevant to contemporary politics. Next, the paper analyzes two main texts that exhibit essential elements of Socratic citizenship most effectively. Through the thorough analysis of the texts the paper argues that Socratic citizenship is composed of diverse elements that the three theorists did not notice sufficiently. Socratic citizenship includes not only socially constructive moralism but also extremely individual moralism and even exotic individual religiosity. In the latter case Socratic citizenship may result in political destruction. Socratic citizenship is not ready-made alternative to our contemporary politics as the three theorist expect. However, the paper concludes that it may evolve into a positive model of contemporary citizenship when we understand that Socrates’ moral absolutism is necessarily combined with his love of knowledge, his philosophy.
