Colonial Korea was the "jewel in the crown" within the Imperial Japan. Until the 1920s, the relationship between Japan, Korea and Manchuria was regarded as the center, semi-periphery and periphery. But the presence of the Manchukuo and its rapid industrialization made the situation changed. This article illuminates the background of the slogan of 'Unity in Korea and Manchukuo' and its historical meaning, focused on the media of Japanese residents in Korea.
Behind the slogan, there was the anxiety of Japanese residents in Korea about the Japanese policy that laid stress on the Manchukuo. It was expressed in their one-sided enthusiasm about the premier of Manchukuo's visit to Korea on April 1937. "Unity in Korea and Manchukuo" was nothing but the slogan contradictory to "Unity in Japan and Manchukuo." While the relationship between Japan and Manchukuo had strengthened, Korea and Manchukuo fell in conflict at many aspects. The Sino-Japanese war decisively made the Manchukuo new "jewel in the crown."
