The purpose of the paper is to identify some characteristics of the knowledge-based industries in the Kyonggi region and further to investigate the competitiveness of those industries. Some important findings are as follows:
(ⅰ) 19.2% of the knowledge-based industries in Korea is concentrated in the Kyonggi region.
(ⅱ) the electric tube and electric parts is the largest knowledge-based industry, on terms of employment, in the region,
(ⅲ) most of the regional knowledge-based industries are located in the cities and towns near Seoul such as Suwon, Sungnam, Bucheon, Anyang etc..
(ⅳ) the national economic impact of the knowledge-based industries of Kyonggi is greater than that of the regions outside the Capital Region.
(ⅴ) the information and communication machinery is the most competitive knowledgebased industry in the Kyonggi region.
