The purpose of this article is to find out which characteristics of a mystery novel the two spy novels; 『Ssangwokjeok』 and 『Bakgeuhsan』 display, and through which processes they display them.
『Ssangwokjeok』, which appeared as a new-style fiction, has a background setting that is consistent with the fundamental characteristics of a typical mystery novel in that the character who is to solve the crime is not involved in the development of the crime. It can be said that this feature of 『Ssangwokjeok』 is a characteristic of a typical mystery novel. However, despite the fact that 『Ssangwokjeok』 successfully established detective characters that are often a common feature of a mystery novel, it failed to create for it self, a solid outline that is often the fundamental feature a good mystery novel.
On the other hand, 『Bakgeuhsan』 overcame the limits that 『Ssangwokjeok』 showed in displaying the proper characteristics of a mystery novel, and formed a solid structure which is the basis of a good mystery novel. This article believes that 『Bakgeuhsan』’s success in creating this proper structure was influenced by 『Nugueh-jwe』, which is an adaptation of Emile Gaboriau’s 『L’Affaire Lerouge』. In the process of adaptation and recreation, 『Bakgeuhsan』 transformed 『Nugueh-jwe』 to fit the new style of the genre. This eliminated the melodramatic elements of the original work, thereby allowing 『Bakgeuhsan』 to concentrate on the fundamental feature of a mystery novel, which is finding the culprit.
