Traditional Russian wedding rituals and laments sung at these ceremonies are substantial elements whereby collective mindsets as well as the so-called Russian national character of Russian people are revealed. The primary purpose of this study is to explore the most important steps through the examination of those wedding rituals, seeing them as ‘metaform’ that represents basic relationship between the inter-social institutions and inter-personal matters. As is well known, the rhythm of peasants' life is understood through the seasons of the agricultural and religious calendar. This calendar and its basic structural system is the framework on which the annual ritual cycle of any birth and wedding ceremonies is based. To be sure, marriage rituals and songs were totally different from those of the upper class. The so-called traditional Russian wedding rituals were microcosm through which the peasants’ mindsets or national myth about the peasants are explored in terms of their worldview, collective memory, and self-identity, etc. For this reason, we can argue that traditional Russian wedding rituals, including their historical evolvement and radical changes, serve the starting point for the study of the problems of Russian identity.
